Rumiko Takahashi was born in 1957 in Niigata. While at university she attended Kazuo Koike's manga workshop, the Gekiga Sonjuku, and she debuted in Weekly Shōnen Sunday in 1978. Her first series, Urusei Yatsura, about an alien princess who attaches herself to an unlucky lecher, began the same year and ran until 1987.
She then kept two series going at once for years. Maison Ikkoku, a romance for the adult magazine Big Comic Spirits, ran alongside Urusei Yatsura, and was followed in Sunday by Ranma ½, Inuyasha, Rin-ne and Mao. Her short stories, including the dark Mermaid Saga, show a range beyond comedy.
Takahashi is a master of the comic machine: a premise, a large cast, and an apparently endless supply of complications. Her timing, her clean, readable art and her ability to turn sharply into horror or sentiment have made her work unusually durable, and almost all of it has been adapted for anime.
She was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame in 2018 and won the Grand Prix at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2019. She was among the first women to succeed on such a scale in shonen magazines, and is often described as one of the most commercially successful women cartoonists in the world.
