Masami Kurumada

11The Signal · 47

車田 正美

Born 1953

The creator of Saint Seiya and Ring ni Kakero, whose shouted special moves and armoured heroes shaped the battle manga of the 1980s.

11Eleven — vision. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.

Career

Masami Kurumada was born in Tokyo in 1953. He made his name in Weekly Shōnen Jump with Ring ni Kakero (1977–1981), a boxing manga whose fights grew more and more fantastic, with punches given names and powers.

The work

He followed it with the ninja series Fūma no Kojirō and then Saint Seiya (1986–1990), his biggest success. He has returned to the world of Saint Seiya in later sequels, and other artists have drawn spin-offs.

The style

Kurumada's heroes are young, beautiful and indestructible, his villains grand, and his fights built from dramatic special moves shouted as they strike. He prizes loyalty, sacrifice and the refusal to give up.

Why he matters

His style of named attacks, ranked warriors and armoured heroes influenced a whole generation of battle manga, and Saint Seiya made him especially famous in Europe and Latin America.

Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 47, which folds down to 11. The weight sits in “Kurumada”, which carries 27 on its own and reduces to 9.

What the 11 brings is vision. The reference files it as a signal received early. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 11's heightened, high-voltage intuition about what comes next.

The vowels alone reduce to 1, the consonants to 1. The subject wants exactly what it appears to want, which is initiative — an unusually undivided reading.

The letters give 11; the subject's own figures do not agree. 人格 core is 10, a 1, 総格 total is 26, an 8 and born is 1953, a 9. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because the romanisation is a convenience for readers abroad, while the strokes are what the pen name was actually built from.

The 11 asks you to remember that nobody noticed this at the time. The 11 is unstable and knows it. Being early and being wrong are indistinguishable until later. The other entries that reduce to 11 are collected on The Signal.
