楳図 かずお
Born 1936
The godfather of manga horror, creator of The Drifting Classroom, whose screaming faces terrified generations of Japanese children. Read from the inquiry, as a 7.
7Filed under 7. The Inquiry takes an open question, and this entry is examines one.
Kazuo Umezu was born in 1936 and grew up in Nara Prefecture. He began in the rental-book market in the 1950s and moved to girls' magazines in the 1960s, where his horror stories, such as Hebi Shōjo ("Snake Girl"), were a sensation.
His major works include The Drifting Classroom, about a school transported to a dead future, Orochi, Cat-Eyed Boy, and the gag manga Makoto-chan, whose hand gesture became a national craze. His later epic My Name Is Shingo combines science fiction and childhood in a story about a robot that becomes conscious.
Umezu's horror is extreme and emotional: wide-eyed faces frozen in screams, grotesque transformations and children in terrible danger. He could also be very funny, and the same exaggeration serves both.
He influenced nearly every manga horror artist who followed; the Umezu Prize, named for him, helped launch Junji Ito. Known for his red-and-white striped clothes and house in Tokyo, he became a celebrity in his own right. He died in 2024.
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 43, which folds down to 7. The weight sits in “Umezu”, which carries 23 on its own and reduces to 5.
What the 7 brings is inquiry. The reference files it as an open question. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 7's pull toward the hidden and the unresolved.
The vowels alone reduce to 3, the consonants to 22. Expression underneath, construction on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
人格 core is 10, a 1, 総格 total is 30, a 3 and born is 1936, a 1 — none of which lands on the 7 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the distance between how a name travels and how it was written.
The 7 asks you to sit with the part that was never explained. The 7 mistakes withholding for depth. Some works filed here are obscure because they are unfinished, not because they are deep. The other entries that reduce to 7 are collected on The Inquiry.
