谷口 ジロー
Born 1947
The quiet master of literary manga, author of The Walking Man and A Distant Neighborhood, and one of the most admired manga artists in Europe. Read from the closing, as a 9.
9Filed under 9. The Closing takes a completion, and this entry is releases one.
Jirō Taniguchi was born in 1947 in Tottori. He worked as an assistant before debuting in the early 1970s, and through the 1980s drew hard-boiled thrillers, adventure stories and animal tales, often in collaboration with writers.
His reputation rests on his reflective work: The Walking Man, nearly wordless episodes of a man strolling through his neighbourhood; A Distant Neighborhood, a time-slip story about family; The Summit of the Gods, a mountaineering epic written by Baku Yumemakura; and Kodoku no Gurume (The Solitary Gourmet), written by Masayuki Qusumi, about a salesman eating alone.
Taniguchi was strongly influenced by European comics, especially the clear line of Franco-Belgian artists such as Moebius, with whom he later collaborated. His precise backgrounds, restrained faces and patient pacing make the ordinary feel significant.
He was enormously admired in France, where he won several Angoulême prizes and was made a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2011. He died in 2017. For many European readers he was the proof that manga could be literature.
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 72, which folds down to 9. The weight sits in “Taniguchi”, which carries 47 on its own and reduces to 11.
Nine is humanitarian & sage — endings, compassion, and the closing of cycles. The reference files it as a completion. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released.
The vowels alone reduce to 1, the consonants to 8. Initiative underneath, power on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
人格 core is 8, 総格 total is 19, a 1 and born is 1947, a 3 — none of which lands on the 9 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the distance between how a name travels and how it was written.
The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. What the 9 still asks is that you work out what survived the ending. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
