クランプ
An all-women creative group that began as a doujinshi circle and became one of the most commercially successful and visually influential forces in shojo manga. Read from the closing, as a 9.
9A 9 by its name: humanitarian & sage, and therefore the closing.
CLAMP is a collective rather than an individual. It formed as a self-published doujinshi circle in the 1980s with a larger membership, and has worked as a four-member group for most of its professional career, with roles divided between story and art.
Their trajectory from doujinshi to major commercial serialisation is one of the clearest illustrations of how porous the boundary between fan and professional production is in manga.
Range. They move between registers few creators attempt — gentle children's fantasy, apocalyptic tragedy, comedy, and dense interconnected supernatural drama, sometimes concurrently.
Design. Their style is among the most imitated in the medium: extremely elongated figures, elaborate costume detail, and layouts that abandon panel borders in favour of overlapping composition and decorative tone. It is shojo visual language at its most refined.
Interconnection. They link separate series through shared characters and cosmology, building a loose continuity across otherwise unrelated works.
Their work handles queer relationships with a matter-of-factness notable for its period and for the children's magazines some of it ran in, and several of their series were altered in early English releases as a result.
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 18, which folds down to 9.
What the 9 brings is reckoning. The reference files it as a completion. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released.
The vowels alone reduce to 1, the consonants to 8. Initiative underneath, power on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The 9 asks you to work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
