Chugong serialised Solo Leveling as a web novel on the Korean platform Munpia beginning in 2016. The webtoon adaptation, drawn by Jang Sung-rak, ran from 2018 to 2021 and became a global commercial phenomenon. He has continued publishing web novels since.
Game logic as narrative structure. Solo Leveling is built on a system interface only the protagonist can see — quests, stats, levels, penalties. This is a convention of Korean web fiction rather than an invention, but Chugong's version is unusually disciplined: the rules are stated, and the escalation follows them.
Escalation as the product. The series is a power fantasy and does not disguise it. Characterisation is thin, the supporting cast largely reacts, and the pleasure is the steady climb itself. Judged as that, it is efficiently constructed.
Korean web novels are serialised in very short instalments on subscription platforms, with reader retention measured chapter by chapter. The form rewards frequent payoff and clear progression, and Solo Leveling's structure reflects those economics directly. Readers arriving from print manga often mistake the pacing for a stylistic choice when it is a structural one.
