Atsushi Ōkubo

8The Ledger · 44

大久保 篤

Born 1981

The creator of Soul Eater and Fire Force, known for gothic, playful designs.

8Name sums to 44 and reduces to 8 — The Ledger, where the reference files a reckoning.

Career

Atsushi Ōkubo was born in 1981. He worked as an assistant to Rando Ayamine, the artist of GetBackers, and made his debut with B. Ichi in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan.

The work

Soul Eater (2004–2013) made him famous. He followed it with Fire Force (2015–2022) in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine, about firefighters who battle people spontaneously turned into burning monsters.

The style

Ōkubo's art is graphic and gothic, with strong shapes, grinning faces and a fashion-conscious look. His stories mix comedy, horror and action, and often deal with madness and faith.

Why he matters

Both of his major series became international hits through their anime, and his distinctive visual style is instantly recognisable.

The name by its numbers

Atsushi25Ōkubo19total44 → 8
人格 core25 → 7総格 total31 → 4born1981 → 1

Counted letter by letter this name comes to 44 — 8 once reduced. The weight sits in “Atsushi”, which carries 25 on its own and reduces to 7.

The reference files it as a reckoning. The number's contribution is money, authority, and the machinery of ambition — and with it the 8's concern with power, money, and who is really in charge, which is the thread the reference follows here.

Split the name again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 1 (initiative) against a Personality of 7 (inquiry) in the consonants — initiative underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

Counted another way the answer changes. 人格 core is 25, a 7, 総格 total is 31, a 4 and born is 1981, a 1. The title says 8; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.

Read on the 8's terms, this entry asks you to follow the money before you judge the decision. The 8 measures what is countable and calls the rest noise. Several entries record industries that optimised themselves into exhaustion. The other entries that reduce to 8 are collected on The Ledger.
