Akira Toriyama (1955–2024) came to manga from a design background, which is visible in everything he drew. Dr. Slump, a gag series, established him commercially before Dragon Ball ran from 1984 to 1995 and became one of the most widely recognised works in the medium.
He also produced character designs for major role-playing game franchises, and that work reached an audience overlapping only partly with his manga readership.
