Simulpub, short for simultaneous publication, is the practice of putting out a licensed English chapter the same day or week as Japan, rather than waiting for the collected volume.
It was a direct response to scanlation. The main advantage unofficial translations had was speed, and simulpub removes it. For major ongoing series the official English chapter now arrives at the same time, often with the most recent chapters free to read.
Publishers typically keep the newest few chapters free and move older ones behind a low-cost subscription, which converts speed into a recurring revenue stream while still competing on immediacy.
Simulpub covers a fraction of what is serialised in Japan, concentrated on commercially significant titles. Most series still arrive later, if at all.
