Stuart Bloom Goes Interdimensional: HBO Max Spinoff Breaks The Big Bang Theory Mold

Stuart Bloom, the perpetually anxious comic book shop owner from The Big Bang Theory, is officially leading his own post-apocalyptic interdimensional sci-fi comedy. Titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, this surprising HBO Max series sees Kevin Sussman reprise his role alongside Lauren Lapkus as Denise, his on-screen girlfriend from the original show. Forget laugh tracks and apartment shenanigans – this is a wildly ambitious departure for the franchise.
Stuart, known for his awkward charm and often-melancholy demeanor, was always a fan favorite, providing an empathetic counterpoint to TBBT's main cast. His late-series relationship with Denise, who genuinely saw something in him, was a small victory for the character. Now, TBBT creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, with Zak Penn, throw Stuart, Denise, geologist Bert (Brian Posehn), and plasma theorist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie) into a ravaged Pasadena. Their mission? Save the universe using a device left by Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard.
Sussman calls the lead role completely unexpected. Yet, he sees a twisted symmetry: Stuart's natural state of panic perfectly suits an apocalyptic setting. "He's a reluctant hero," Sussman explained, forced into action by overwhelming circumstances. Lapkus was equally surprised to return, noting the show reintroduces Stuart and Denise after they've survived independently in a shattered world. Their reunion isn't an immediate team-up; Denise has her own battles, and the dynamic promises more than simple romance amidst the chaos.
“Stuart's natural state of panic perfectly suits an apocalyptic setting.”
More Stories
This isn't your typical TBBT continuation. Unlike CBS's traditional sitcom spinoffs Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe leans hard into its sci-fi premise and embraces the nerd pop culture origins of its parent show with a premium cable twist. It's a bold move for a character previously relegated to the sidelines, promising genuine stakes and a fresh perspective.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premieres July 23rd on HBO Max, with new episodes releasing Thursdays through September 24th. Prepare for a Stuart you never expected.
Catzye Take
This series is a fascinating gamble, taking a beloved but unassuming character and thrusting him into a huge genre shift. Fans will want to watch how Stuart and Denise navigate this new world, and if it truly captures that 'nerd pop culture' feel on a premium platform. It's certainly not your grandma's Big Bang Theory.
Numerological Reading
Reading: Kevin Sussman
Read through its central name, Kevin Sussman, this story reduces to a Destiny 5 — Freedom Seeker. Its vibration — freedom, disruption, and restless movement — is a lens for the 5's restlessness and hunger for change.
The 5 is the adventurer — curious, magnetic, and allergic to routine. It thrives on change and connection, and burns out when freedom becomes mere escape.
How the numbers are built
- Destiny
- 41 → 5 = 5
- Heart
- 18 → 9 = 9
- Personality
- 23 → 5 = 5
The subject is reduced with standard Pythagorean numerology — each letter mapped to a digit 1–9, summed, and reduced to a single digit or master number. A lens for paying attention, not a forecast.
