President Curtis Spinoff Hits Adult Swim This July, Trades Rick and Morty Chaos for Workplace Comedy

Adult Swim is betting big on the multiverse, but with a surprising twist. Its upcoming Rick and Morty spinoff, President Curtis, is hitting screens this July, and Adult Swim head Michael Ouweleen promises a show that's "surprising how different" it is from its chaotic predecessor. Forget Rick's reckless abandon; this new series is a "workplace comedy" led by the incomparable Keith David.
Ouweleen, speaking at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, teased that President Curtis offers a fresh perspective. The show centers on President Andre Curtis (Keith David) and his eccentric staff tackling interdimensional diplomacy and paranormal investigations – crises Rick Sanchez usually blows off. Co-created by Rick and Morty's Dan Harmon and James Siciliano, the series also stars Stephanie Beatriz and Jim Rash, diving deeper into the backstories of supporting players like Banks, O'Doyle, and Janice.
"President Curtis has always been a blast to play," David shared, expressing excitement to explore his world without Rick stealing the spotlight. Harmon and Siciliano echoed this, calling Curtis "one of our favorite characters to write" and highlighting his unique ability to go "toe-to-toe with Rick and still hold office." This series gives fans sci-fi missions from Curtis's grounded perspective. Adult Swim greenlit the show based purely on the strength of the character, a testament to its standalone potential. Get ready for a different kind of interdimensional bureaucracy.
“This is a series we would have greenlit even if it didn't have anything at all to do with 'Rick and Morty.'”
Catzye Take
This feels like a strategic move for Adult Swim, expanding a popular franchise without diluting its core. Fans eager for more of Rick and Morty's world but also craving something fresh will want to tune in. What's interesting is how it allows for deep dives into side characters, a rarity for the main show.
