What changes when manga and anime cross languages. A close-reading series on translation, localization, dubbing, and lettering — on titles renamed by lawyers, sound effects drawn into the art, and the difference between carrying a work across and rebuilding it on the far bank.

Tetsuwan Atom reduces to Destiny 1. Astro Boy reduces to Destiny 7. Same robot, two names, two numbers — and in the gap between them sits everything this series is about.
Change one letter of Roronoa Zoro and his Destiny 8 becomes a Destiny 11 — a master number. Nothing about the swordsman changed. A legal department was nervous.
Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind reduce to the same three numbers — 7, 7, 9. It is the only clean crossing I have found. The film it names was cut to pieces.
Gakkou no Kaidan reduces to 9, 9, 9 — a perfect triple. The ADV dub that threw out its script and improvised a comedy reduces to 3, 8, 4: the entertainer, the money, the craft.
