Will Ferrell Tees Up Sports Comedy Comeback with Netflix's The Hawk

Will Ferrell is back in the sports comedy arena, a genre he largely abandoned two decades ago. His new Netflix series, The Hawk, sees him return to the field — or, rather, the golf course — as Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins. The show drops July 16th.
Ferrell’s last major sports comedy was Talladega Nights in 2006. Since then, he's dipped his toes in other projects, but The Hawk marks a full-on return to the specific brand of athletic absurdity he perfected. Here, he’s a former number one golfer whose best days are behind him. His body screams retirement, but his heart still believes he's one major win away from the Grand Slam and the greatest comeback in golf history. His ex-wife and golf prodigy son, Lance, see the writing on the wall, but Lonnie refuses to quit.
This isn't just a starring vehicle; The Hawk is also Ferrell's first created live-action series. He's producing through Gloria Sanchez Productions, alongside Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman's T-Street Productions. The cast also features fellow Saturday Night Live alums Molly Shannon and Chris Parnell, plus Jimmy Tatro and Fortune Feimster. It’s a solid lineup for what promises to be a classic Ferrell high-concept romp. Fans will be eager to see if he can still hit that sweet spot.
“Will Ferrell returns to sports comedy after nearly 20 years, starring in and creating Netflix's The Hawk.”
Catzye Take
This is a significant return for Ferrell to a genre where he truly shines. Fans who grew up with Talladega Nights and Blades of Glory will want to see if The Hawk recaptures that magic. It's also interesting to see him take on a creator role, suggesting a deeper personal investment in the project.
