Oni Press Bets Big on Curt Pires' Super Mondo Mega Mutts #1 – Can It Hit 70K?

Curt Pires has exploded onto the indie comic scene, transforming from a respected stalwart to a certified hitmaker. His Image Comics series, Lost Fantasy, saw multiple sell-outs and spin-offs. More impressively, Fireborn #1, co-written with Franklin Jonas and artist Patrick Mulholland, rocketed to an astounding 70,000 units sold. Even Mad Cave's 51 #1 stirred significant speculator buzz. Now, Pires is back, throwing down another creator-owned gauntlet with Super Mondo Mega Mutts #1 from Oni Press.
This new series, debuting July 15th just before San Diego Comic-Con, teams Pires with artist Juan Gedeon. Gedeon is a serious talent, handpicked by Daniel Warren Johnson for DC's Jurassic League, a series so popular it's inspiring a James Gunn-helmed animated film. That's a strong creative pedigree.
Oni Press is clearly all-in on Super Mondo Mega Mutts. They're pulling out all the stops, announcing their first-ever "FOC Reveal Variant" by Fireborn artist Patrick Mulholland, alongside a heavy lineup of covers from Gedeon, Alex Diotto, Karl Kerschl, and David LaFuente. Retailers reportedly met the announcement at ComicsPRO with "applause and chants," and a "red band" trailer has amassed tens of thousands of views online. Oni is pushing this hard.
“The big question remains: can Super Mondo Mega Mutts #1 replicate Fireborn's 70,000-unit success?”
Catzye Take
This launch is a real test for both Curt Pires and Oni Press. Pires is on a hot streak, and Oni clearly sees huge potential here, throwing significant marketing muscle behind it. Fans will want to watch the FOC numbers closely to see if Super Mondo Mega Mutts lives up to the hype and becomes the next big creator-owned hit.
