Noah Hawley Slams Game Adaptation Tropes for FX's Far Cry Series, Lizzy Caplan Joins Cast

Noah Hawley, the creative force behind FX’s acclaimed Fargo and Legion, isn't just adapting Ubisoft's Far Cry series—he's tearing down established video game adaptation tropes in the process. He confirmed the upcoming FX series won't directly adapt any game. Instead, it will lean into an anthology format, much like his successful Fargo. And adding serious star power to this bold vision: Lizzy Caplan (Fatal Attraction, Castle Rock) has joined the cast.
Hawley, who will co-showrun with Rob Mac and direct the first two episodes, pulled no punches. He believes most video games inherently "don't make for the best drama." For him, game narratives prioritize gameplay, relegating crucial human drama to "cut scenes that you can skip." That's "death for a show," he stated bluntly. This isn't a slavish re-creation; it's a "dialog with this franchise," much like his transformative approach to Alien or X-Men properties.
The Far Cry franchise's own anthology nature — "every time they release a new game, it is a totally different story" — deeply appealed to Hawley. This aligns perfectly with his series vision: each season will pit "civilized people into situations where they have to become increasingly uncivilized." It's the core Far Cry experience, reimagined for television.
“Games are built in a way that doesn't make for the best drama. That is death for a show.”
Catzye Take
Hawley's candid comments on video game adaptations are refreshing in an industry often afraid to critique its source material. His Fargo-esque anthology approach to Far Cry could set a new standard, focusing on narrative strengths over direct translation. Fans should watch closely to see if this model pays off, especially with Caplan's talent added to the mix.
